Who is Base White?

With over 20 years in the industry, Steve Ong opened Base White in 2023. Steve started his printing journey after completing a Photography degree in his hometown of Perth. Shooting was Steve’s passion but the love of printing quickly moved to the forefront of his photographic pursuits. After relocating to Sydney in 2004 with the hope of expanding on his skillset, Steve took a position at Pixel Perfect Prolab. A lab world renowned for its print accuracy and colour management practices. It is here where Steve honed his skills and would later became Production Manager. In 2016 a further need for growth resulted in Steve taking a role at the Kodak supplier as their NSW Business Manager. Sales was not something Steve intended to pursue but he immensely enjoyed the privilege. Working directly with other labs to help them offer better quality and service to their clients was extremely rewarding.

In 2020 by chance, Steve commenced working with painter Martine Emdur, moonlighting as the print technician for her new gallery Twenty Twenty Six in Bondi. Whilst continuing his day job, Steve would print reproduction works for Martine and associated artists on weekends. The experience of working directly with artists, complimented by Steve’s technical expertise, set him on this journey to create Base White.
